taking medication

The answer to this question still depends on the type blood test that you will undergo and the medications that you will take. In some cases you can take your medicine when fasting for blood work and in some cases you cannot. If you are uncertain about it or you have question about the blood work, then you should ask your healthcare provider.

Medication and Blood Test Results

There are some medicines that can affect the results of a blood work, but this does not mean that you have to stop taking your medicine.

For instance, oral corticosteroids can boost your cholesterol levels in a blood cholesterol test. On the other hand, your healthcare provider who arranged the blood test can acknowledge this when interpreting your results. Therefore, you do not have to stop taking your medicines.

If you are not sure, then you can still go on taking your medicine and consult with your healthcare provider. You may also need to bring your medicine with you to show the person conducting your blood test.

When Should You Stop Taking Your Medicine?

You should not stop taking your prescribed medication unless you are told to do so by your healthcare provider who is responsible for your blood work. On the other hand, in some scenarios you may need to halt taking your medicine before the blood work.

For instance, if you are about to undergo an amylase test for diagnosing pancreatic enzyme deficiency, some medications can make your amylase levels to rise like as indomethacin, corticosteroids, and opiates like codeine and morphine.

Medication for the Ailment Being Tested

If you are having a blood test to determine whether your medication is taking effect, then in most scenarios you should continue taking your medicine. For instance, if you are taking medicine to reduce your cholesterol levels, then you should continue taking it before the cholesterol blood test because the result will show whether your medicine is not working.
